Song of the Day: This Woman’s Work

How can you choose a favorite song by one of your all time favorite artists? It’s tough when the breadth of good music is so diverse. For this reason I can’t say This Woman’s Work is my favorite track by Maxwell when songs like Lifetime, Sumthin’ Sumthin’ and “… Til the Cops Come Knockin’ are on his discography. However, This Woman’s Work is definitely high atop that list.

It’s actually not a Maxwell original. Kate Bush first recorded the song in 1989 for the film She’s Having a Baby and it is featured in the pivotal birth scene. Maxwell covered it in 1997 for his MTV Unplugged album and it was so popular that he recorded a studio version for his 2001 album, Now.

This Woman’s Work is just flat out beautiful. The strength and resilience of women is something that should always be celebrated and noted more often and Maxwell strikes a cord with his version. It’s one of those songs I can listen to no matter what mood I’m in.

Song of the Day: Love You

God, I love Maxwell. Completely. Unconditionally.

Eight years between Now and BLACKsummers’night and now four years and counting after BLACKsummers’night is too long to go with out new Maxwell music, but oh when we do get it, it’s beautiful.

BLACKsummers’night is a trilogy, and in July Maxwell said the second part blackSUMMERS’night was going to be a late summer/early fall release. However, as fall as embarked on us, there is no news on that front.

For now, all we can do is listen to the beauty that he has graced us with thus far. Today, I can’t stop listening to Love You. It’s upbeat, yet there’s a sense of urgency in his voice. You can actually feel him imploring: I can be anything you want me to be/I just wanna love you/Show you exactly what you mean to me/Honey, let me love you.

Go ahead Maxwell, you can love me. I’ll be waiting.
