Song of the Day: Bourbon

Buttery falsetto vocals on top of a synthesized electronic sound – I’m all in. Los Angeles based R&B artists Gallant’s Bourbon carries you away on a journey with it’s sound. My immediate thought when I heard the beat was that it had to be inspired by Prince, so it wasn’t a surprise when I read that Gallant took inspiration from songwriting duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for his sound – the two came from Prince’s Paisley Park camp.

It’s one of those songs that can be categorized as “new-wave” R&B that so on trend now, but it reminds me so much of the R&B that I grew up listening to in the 90s. I often find myself hitting repeat on this as one listen just isn’t enough.

Cause I loved in cold blood and got used to it
Angels say trust the detox
But I’m shaking I need it like bourbon in my coffee cup
