Radikal Readings: This Is How You Lose Her

This Is How You Lose Her – what an intriguing title. Junot Diaz has become one of my favorite writers and this is his most recently released work. A collection of stories focused on Dominican American characters experiencing love, heartbreak, infidelity, loss, hardship and the consequences of their decisions.

At the heart of the narrative is Yunior, who appears in several pieces. If you’re read Diaz, you know that Yunior appears in many of his works (books and articles). The pieces chronicle his relationships and tendency to cheat, until the one betrayal that shatters him so completely that it sends him into a downward depression he can’t seem to remove himself from.

It sounds like quite depressing subject matter, yet that wasn’t the feeling I got. Yes, you really feel for these characters, but Diaz’s prose is so beautiful and unsettling that you don’t feel like you are in a dark place. You’re transported to these real, messy, and complicated feelings and story lines filled with regret. It’s hard not to be lost in feelings by the time you’re done with this book.
