Product Rave: NARS Matte Velvet Lip Pencil

Winter and deep/dark lips – so cliche, but so right! My favorite (actually only) way to wear deeper lip colors is matte formulations. So when I saw the NARS display for their Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, I had to snap at least one up, which happened to be the berry/wine Damned.

I am so glad I did, because these are amazing. They are probably the best matte lip product I’ve used and at $25 a pop, they better be! The NARS website says, “lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. The long lasting, non-drying formula is enriched with emollients for a creamy texture…” All of that is very true.
Since it’s a pencil, it’s easy to apply with no fuss. With Damned, a couple of swipes leaves a berry like stain, but when I apply multiple layers, I get the perfect deep wine color that I love in cooler months. It’s definitely creamier or more velvety than most other matte lip products I’ve tried and it lasts a good 4 or 5 hours without reapplication.

This might have even, gasp, passed MAC’s Rebel as my favorite berry lip. I love that it’s versatile and if I want a darker look, I can use MAC’s Currant lip liner. A few swipes gets you a more day time friendly look, which is what my cousin went gaga over when she tried it (and mind you, she’s not a deep lip color kind of girl).

A major plus for me was that my lips didn’t get too dry or cracked as they have in the past with products like this. I was sure to exfoliate before and applied and removed a lip balm before application.

I love it so much, that I can’t wait to head back to Sephora and pick up some more colors – Cruella looks like a gorgeous deep red and Walkyrie the perfect pinkish brown for the office.

If you’re a matte lip lover, I definitely recommend trying these out!
